Hydrophobic Silica

The surface of silica has silanol groups (Si-OH) that are hydrophilic and siloxane groups (Si-O-Si) that are moderately hydrophobic. Through Silanization, which is the process of treating the silica with reactive Organosilanes to modify its surface which eventually leads to its hydrophobicity. In this process, the hydrophilic group end of the silanol group is reacting with certain organic groups in the reactive silane to induce surface modification on the silica particles. Physical structure of the hydrophobic silica is porous and due to the surface modification, it displays excellent hydrophobicity.

The benefits of using hydrophobic silica industrially are improved processability and rheological properties, water repellent properties, increased corrosion resistance, improved reinforcement and scratch resistance, thixotropy agent and many more.
